Elevate Your Coaching Through Professional Supervision
Deepen your practice, sharpen your skills, and maintain the highest standards with ICF-aligned coaching supervision. Join fellow coaches committed to excellence through reflective practice.
Coaching supervision is a collaborative learning practice where coaches work with a qualified supervisor to reflect on their coaching, receive feedback, and develop their capabilities. It provides a confidential space to explore challenges and insights from your coaching relationships.
Benefits
Supervision enhances your coaching effectiveness, builds confidence, prevents burnout, and helps you navigate complex client situations. For clients, it ensures they receive the highest quality coaching from practitioners committed to continuous improvement.
ICF Position
The International Coaching Federation recognizes supervision as a key component of coach development and professional practice, reinforcing ethical standards and competency development throughout a coach's career. Up to 10 hours of coaching supervision may be used toward Credential Renewal in each three-year cycle. Coaching supervision hours count as Core Competency CCE credits.

Leanne's Coaching
Supervision Journey
I started my coach training in 2004 and was fortunate to train with Teri-E Belf, the first MCC, who was an active force in growing the ICF, including in creating the original coaching competencies and ethics. Over the years, I took many trainings, was mentored by other coaches, and remain a part of two wonderful international coaching communities, Success Unlimited Network and Radiance Partners.
In 2019 I completed the ICF PCC Assessor training, and in 2021 the ICF PCC Marker Assessor Follow-up Training. While these made me a better technical coach, I still felt like something was missing.
I'd heard a bit from my European colleagues about coaching supervision, but didn't know much about it. Interested in learning more, in November of 2021 I completed a 1.5 CCE course with Robin Shohet entitled "Fear and Love in Supervision." The question I wrote down was "What would you not want your supervisor to know? How come?" That was intriguing!
But I didn't know anyone who was a coaching supervisor. Eventually, I did my research and in June 2023 wrote to a couple of supervisors I thought might be a match for me. One of them was a wonderful match, and we've been meeting approximately monthly since then.
The thing I love about coaching supervision, as I've experienced it, is that it treats me as a whole person. Yes, I discuss technical coaching with my supervisor at times. But we also talk about who I am and who I want to be as a coach, how I can care for myself while caring for my clients, and more.
Inspired by my own experiences in supervision, I decided to train to be a coaching supervisor. As of April 2025, I will have completed the EMCC Accredited Coaching Supervision training program of the International Centre for Coaching Supervision (ICCS). The training has taken place over 8 months and featured 20 live classes as well as reflective practice groups, one-to-one mentoring, group supervision, and real-world practice. I have also gained another wonderful international community, this time of fellow coaching supervisors.
I love being in supervision with you, my fellow coaches. I have more than 40 hours of supervision experience with 9 coaches as of this writing in March 2025, and it is such a gift to be in community with and learn with you.
If you are thinking about experiencing the gifts of supervision for yourself, reach out. Let's see if we're a supervision match.

What's the Recommended Frequency for Coaching Supervision?
"EMCC Global believes that experienced practitioners require a minimum of four hours individual supervision per year, evenly distributed across twelve months. EMCC Global also believes that the minimum ratio of practice to supervision, for an experienced practitioner should be 35 practice hours to 1 hour of supervision received.
"In the case that the practitioner is carrying out more than one form of work that requires supervision, then EMCC Global recommends that the minimum hours of supervision required per year increases from four to eight. In other words, if someone is delivering any combination of coaching, mentoring, team coaching, supervision and/or organisational development interventions, then the minimum number of hours supervision that they require is eight hours, distributed evenly across twelve months."
Here's some more perspective from my colleague Kaye Heyes:
"David Clutterbuck says one hour every 20 client hours.
And other coaching organisations suggest every 15 client hours.
With counselling, you're expected to have one hour of supervision for every 8 client hours (BACP) (!)"
Leanne meets with her coaching supervisor about once a month. Some coaches meet their coaching supervisor every two weeks. How often to meet depends on where you are in your coaching journey, what work you are doing, how often you are meeting clients, and on your personal preferences.
