Self-Knowledge: The Key to the Universe

What if you could predict what you are likely to do in a particular circumstance? What if you could predict what your co-worker, spouse, or child is likely to do in a particular circumstance? Well, with a little knowledge, you can make a pretty good guess about what that person’s preference is. Of course, since a preference is just that – like being right or left-handed – you or another can always choose to do something else. But at least you’ll know what your inclination is, be able to recognize that inclination when it arises, and consciously choose what you want to do.

The most recent Bulletin of Psychological Type, published by the Association for Psychological Type, includes several articles on how knowing one’s Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) personality type has been of use.

One author, Sidney Craig Courtice, talks about how type has added value to her relationship with her daughter.

Another, Andrea Boulanger Lowe, discusses her experience working with an organization that has a type vastly different from her own.

Chris Nichols discusses how, in mid-life, our non-dominant preferences can start to bloom.

Kathy Quinn discusses becoming comfortable being oneself regardless of others’ expectations, thanks to knowing type.

Kathryn Jarvis talks about how knowing type has created more acceptance in relationships.

And, in the article Self-Knowledge: The Key to the Universe, which you can read by clicking the link, I talk about how type has impacted my career choices and how I use my time and energy.

Resources: Using Type While Coaching

Pam Fox Rollin of IdeaShape hosts a monthly Special Interest Group (SIG) call on Type Coaching. This month, Pam invited me to speak about Shifting Perspective Using Type. In our hour-long call, I highlighted the ICF Coaching Competencies we use when we use Type to shift perspective, identified what the client gets, highlighted the advantages of coach awareness of self in order to serve the client, provided several examples of how I have used Type to shift perspective, and then thanks to another member of the SIG, provided a 5 minute coaching demonstration using Type to shift perspective. I then listed some possible resources for using Type to shift perspective, answered questions, and gave a brief summary.

Some of the resources I highlighted include:

  • Otto Kroeger Associates: great source of workshops and books on Type
  • Personality Pages: interesting collection of free materials on Type
  • Live Light: Simple Steps: 52 weeks of meditations and inquiries designed to appeal across Type while shifting perspective
  • DK’s book, Coaching Successfully: great introduction to coaching skills for supervisors
  • Byron Katie’s book Loving What Is: Four Questions that Can Change Your Life: specific technique to use to enable self or client to consider whether perspective might be changed or shifted

I continue to find Type a useful tool for better self-knowledge, leading to better self-management, as well as a framework I can use as I listen to my clients and think about what their perspective is. If you’re interested in becoming certified to use Type, contact CPP.

If you’d like to know your own Type for your own or your team’s success, contact me at 703-297-2224 or email me for your individualized Type Assessment.
